ABOUT THE MONASTERY
HISTORY
The settlement in the March of Istria arose around the Benedictine Saint Peter and Paul Abbey, founded in the 1130s and first mentioned about 1174/76. The abandoned monastery was dedicated to the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit by the Habsburg emperor Frederick III with the consent of Pope Pius II in 1459. The present-day Baroque monastery complex was finished in 1731.
SAINT PETER
Peter the Apostle (also known as Simon Peter or Cephas) was one of the original Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ and one of the first leaders of the early Christian Church. He appears in all four New Testament gospels as well as in the Acts of the Apostles. Catholic tradition accredits Peter as the first bishop of Rome, i.e. Pope, and also as the first bishop of Antioch.
SAINT PAUL
Paul the Apostle (also named Saul of Tarsus) was a Christian apostle who spread the teachings of Jesus during the first century. For his contributions to the New Testament, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of the Apostolic Age. He founded several Christian communities in Asia Minor and Europe from the mid-40s to mid-50s AD.
SAINT PAUL THE FIRST HERMIT
Blessed Eusebius of Esztergom was a Hungarian hermit and canon (cleric) who was born c.1200 and died January 1270. He founded the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit. Eusebius was beatified in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter's Square, Vatican City.
